THANJAVUR, FEB. 16. A proposal to start a new course in Environmental Engineering at the B.Tech level from the academic year 2004-05 was approved recently at the fifth meeting of the academic council of the Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA), a deemed university here. R. Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, presided. Rajendra Prakash, formerly Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of Roorkee, said in the context of increasing importance given to environmental issues by the Government and industries, the new course would fulfil a vital national need. The increasing importance of English in the context of globalisation has made it essential for students to develop effective communication skills in English. Russia, Germany, France, China, Japan and, in India, Bihar and West Bengal, have taken steps to establish exclusive centres for the study of English as a language of international communication. Therefore, to enable higher secondary and tertiary level students to improve their skills, the SASTRA would be starting a six-month certificate course in English through correspondence from July 1. The students will be required to attend contact programmes during week-ends. The council also approved a proposal to set up a Centre for Advanced Research in Indian Systems of Medicine for conducting research in herbal medicine. It also approved a proposal to start B.Com, B.B.A, M.Com and MBA programmes through correspondence from the academic year 2004-05. It was decided to start a new half-yearly journal devoted exclusively to research.
