Dissension in Gobi Congress unit

By Our Staff Reporter

ERODE, FEB. 16. Prior to announcement of its candidate for the Gobichettipalayam Parliamentary seat, the Congress is facing dissension in the constituency.

The former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, who is the aspirant for the seat, had held discussions with partymen some days ago in Gobichettipalayam.

But last evening, on behalf of the Gobichettipalayam Parliament Congress workers, the Kongu Friends Association, the Nadar Association, the Vettuva Gounder Peravai, the Minorities Association, the River Water Irrigational Ryots Association, Thadapalli; the Arakkankottai Ryots Association, the Tobacco Growers Association, the Avinashi Athikadavu Farmers Association and the Handloom Weavers Association, a meeting was held in Gobichettipalayam. The All-India Congress Committee member, R. Arumugam, presided.

The meeting unanimously resolved to request the AICC and the TNCC to nominate N.R. Tiruvenkatam (formerly of the TMC) as the candidate, as he belonged to Gobichettipalayam and had contacts with the grassroots level. Mr. Thiruvenkatam, Vidiyal Sekar and leading Congress members (most of them from the TMC faction) addressed the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Erode District Congress Committee office-bearers wanted the seat to be given to Mr. Elangovan.
