PUDUKOTTAI, FEB.16. The successful implementation of the self-help group concept has paved way for improvement of the rural economy and for empowerment of rural women, the Fisheries Minister, M. Radhakrishnan, said. Speaking at a function to distribute welfare assistance to the members belonging to the economically weaker sections here yesterday, Mr. Radhakrishnan said the Government had accorded top priority for the women SHG concept as it enabled women to indulge in economic activities to stand on their own leg. He urged women of rural areas to take full advantage of the SHG concept to improve their living condition. The Collector, Hiteshkumar Makwana, in his presidential address, said the district administration was taking utmost care in selecting the people to receive assistance under welfare programmes o ensure that the benefits reached the targeted group. He said that during the last six months, a total of 1,146 beneficiaries were found ineligible to receive the benefit under the Andyodhya Anna Yojana scheme and their names removed from the list with immediate effect. The scrutiny of the list of beneficiaries was being continued and all ineligible names would be deleted instantly. So far 30,000 people belonging to the people below poverty line had been provided assistance under different welfare schemes, Mr. Makwana, added. The MLAs, C. Vijayabaskar and A. Venkatachalam, the chairperson of the district panchayat, Vanishri Kumararaja and others spoke.
