Submit IIM fees break-up: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI, FEB. 16. The Supreme Court today directed the petitioners who had challenged the reduction of fees in the six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) from Rs. 1.50 lakhs to Rs. 30,000 a year to file an affidavit by February 27, disclosing the components of fee charged by them.

A three-judge Bench, comprising the Chief Justice V.N. Khare, Justice A.R. Lakshmanan and Justice S.H. Kapadia, while questioning the locus standi of the petitioners in filing the case when the IIMs themselves had not challenged the fee reduction, observed: "We are all for maintaining excellence in the IIMs but at the same time they should not only be for the elite class."

The Bench asked the petitioners to give the break-up of how the Rs. 1.50 lakhs annual fee charged from every student was utilised, besides the extent of subsidy in the fee and the annual grant provided by the Government, and to explain how much was spent towards revenue and capital expenditure.

It also asked the petitioners to supply the details of the Rs. 100 crore corpus of the IIMs and their balance-sheets for the last 10 years.

The Bench issued the directions during the hearing of a petition filed by the advocate, Sandeep Parikh, and two others challenging the decision of the Human Resource Development Ministry reducing the fee.
