Congress dubs TDP meet `utter failure'

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, FEB. 16. The city Congress unit on Monday exuded confidence that people would support the Congress in the forthcoming elections.

The sagging image of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) among people could be gauged from the fact that the meeting organised by the ruling party attended by none other than the TDP president and Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Sunday was an `utter failure', the former Congress MLAs -- Jaleel Khan and Devineni Rajasekhar -- and others claimed.

Addressing a press conference here, they said despite efforts by the ruling party leaders to mobilise people by offering money, not many turned up, as they were `disillusioned with the TDP rule'. "We have personally seen the TDP leaders distributing money to those who had attended the meeting. But, despite their efforts, they could hardly mobilise 2,000 people," Mr. Khan said. He also ridiculed claims of the Agriculture Minister, V. Sobhanadreeswara Rao, that tight security arrangements, made for Mr. Naidu's visit prevented people from coming to the meeting.
