COIMBATORE, FEB. 16. The City Police arrested four businessmen on Monday on charges of using explosives without obtaining prior permission to raze down some structures, including a water tank, in a mill in Singanallur. The blasting of the structures on Sunday had allegedly caused damage to nearby houses. According to police, the mill that had been closed for years, was purchased by the businessmen recently for demolishing it and selling the land as smaller plots for housing. When some of the structures could not be brought down using conventional method, it was decided to use explosives purchased from a contractor in Tirupur. The debris from the explosion hit four houses in the vicinity. The Singanallur police reached the spot and sniffer dogs were pressed into service to find whether more gelatine sticks and detonators were stored in the mill. The arrested are Shivakumar, Palanisamy, Venkatesan and Andavan.
