Dhiraj Jadhav corners glory

By Our Special Correspondent

GURGAON, FEB. 17. Individual glory for Dhiraj Jadhav was all that West Zone gained on the concluding day of the drab Duleep Trophy match against Central Zone at the Devi Lal Stadium here on Tuesday. The draw, with not even the first innings completed, meant the teams earned nothing from the contest.

It was meaningless cricket on the final day with the bowlers resigned to their fate on a dead pitch and the batsmen just content to hang in, waiting with tremendous patience for the loose ball to come their way.

Jadhav, 64 overnight in West's score of 163 for one, showed exemplary dedication to his job and compiled a 445-ball knock of 154 which contained nine fours. His partner, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, denied himself a century with a rash attempt which ended in his stumping. Kanitkar's 96 off 285 balls contained nine fours and his association with Jadhav for the second wicket was 213 runs.

Jadhav, having set his eyes on a double century, paid the price for a wild swipe and was caught brilliantly at point by Devendra Bundela. West lost Kaushik Aphale at the same score but Jacob Martyn and Nayan Mongia played out the remaining time with ease even as the two teams showed relief when the match was called off after six mandatory overs.

Railways off-spinner Kulamani Parida, in contention for a place in the Indian team for the tour to Pakistan, bowled impressively. He commanded respect with his tight length and was rewarded with two wickets. The absence of Harbhajan Singh gives Parida a chance to push his way into the Indian team with stiff competition coming from Sarandeep Singh and Ramesh Powar.

The state of the pitch set off a debate with Central and West critical of the slow nature. ``It doesn't help anyone,'' remarked veteran leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani. He should know, having spent 20 years on the circuit.

Central now meets North at the same venue from February 21 while West plays North at Dharamshala from February 27.
