Indian elected chairman of U.N. panel

NEW DELHI,
FEB. 17.
Desh Deepak Verma, joint secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forests has been elected chairman of the working group for the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity in the ongoing Seventh Conference of Parties (CoP) meet at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
The issues for the CoP-7 include the biological diversity of mountain ecosystems, the role of protected areas in the preservation of biological diversity, the transfer of technology cooperation as well as the target set at its sixth meeting that is to be achieved by the year 2010.
