KOCHI, FEB. 17. The Kumbalam village panchayat is gearing up to protest against the toll collection at the Kumbalam-Panangad bridge. A fast organised by the Janakeeya Samara Samithi was inaugurated at the Madavana junction here by Dominic Presentation, MLA. The village panchayat president, K.S. Radhakrishnan, presided. The samithi was formed at the behest of the village panchayat to urge the Government to exempt the bridge from the toll, as it had done in the case of the Nettoor and Kundanoor bridges, said Viswambharan, vice-president of the panchayat. The toll is being collected for more than 16 years now. The request of the samithi was to exempt the bridge from the toll and this could be levied for the longer bridge at Aroor, he added. The samithi is also planning to mobilise a crowd of about 3,000 people to block traffic along the National Highway in front of the Fisheries College, Panangad on February 21. The panchayat has already submitted representations to the Minister for Public Works, M.K. Muneer as well as the executive engineer of the National Highway Authority of India, regarding the exemption of the Kumbalam-Panangad bridge from the toll.
