Teachers told to ensure 100% result

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM, FEB. 17. No targets have been fixed for schools but teachers should ensure that no child fails in the SSC examination, the Commissioner and Director of the School Education, Manmohan Singh, has said.

Addressing headmasters of high schools of the district at a meeting organised by the Department of Education here today, Dr. Manmohan Singh said every child was capable of passing the SSC examination and if a student failed in the examination after studying for 10 years it was the failure of the teacher, the school and of the department. The examination would commence on March 17.

Learning needs and style of study was not common for children and it was duty of teachers to help them learn. Students could achieve good results if teachers were determined. Referring to the performance in Visakhapatnam district, he appreciated the fact that the pass percentage had gone up from 42 per cent in 1997-98 to 69 per cent last year.

There should not be any dearth of teachers as 423 vacancies of teachers had been filled, 2,225 vidya volunteers recruited and 898 teachers reallocated. The Commissioner wanted the District Educational Officer to hold a meeting with the Municipal Corporation authorities to find a way to improve pass percentage in Municipal Corporation high schools.

The Regional Joint Director of School Education, E.R. Appa Rao, recalled the observation of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, that a student was considered lucky if he had a good teacher since the good teacher could offset all other deficiencies in the student's life. He urged headmasters to provide a good leadership to teachers.

Students must be trained in such a way that they should have their doubts cleared and they would get through the examination.
