Congress petitions poll panel against TDP

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, FEB. 17. The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has petitioned the Chief Election Commissioner against the Telugu Desam Party alleging misuse of official machinery. In a letter written to the CEC on Tuesday, the party accused the Chief Minister, N.Chandrababu Naidu, of misusing the administration extensively for canvassing for his party.

Citing the reported plans of the Government to ferry people to the proposed `Vijaya Bheri' of the party to be held at Hyderabad on February 22, the APCC chief spokesperson, K.Rosaiah, said the Government was diverting 1,700 hired buses of APSRTC for the purpose. It would also inconvenience the commuters across the State, he said.

He urged the CEC to intervene immediately and put a halt to the caretaker Government's exploitation.

Meanwhile, the Congress leaders continued their TDP bashing over the issue of arming civilians terming Mr.Naidu "trigger-happy and prone to violence". Addressing separate press conferences, Renuka Chowdary, ex-MP, and other leaders said here on Tuesday that no right-thinking person could think of it. The idea would demoralise the police.

CBI enquiry sought

The AICC secretary, V.Hanumantha Rao, demanded a CBI enquiry into the auction of plots at Jubilee Hills, which fetched the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority, a whopping Rs.100 crores. Such prices for a piece of land were unheard of and there was a calculated attempt to jack up the prices by a section, he alleged.
