BANGALORE, FEB. 17. As many as 650 cases of suicide by farmers have been reported in the State during the past 10 months, according to an official press note. Many farmers committed suicide owing to failure of crops and inability to repay loans taken from financial institutions and moneylenders. Of the 650 reported cases, 623 cases were brought before the official committee, of which 442 cases were rejected between April 1, 2003 and February 16, 2004. Financial assistance was provided in 168 cases. A large number of suicides were reported from Hassan (69), Shimoga and Chitradurga (46 each), Mandya (41), Belgaum and Davangere (39 each), Haveri (38), Tumkur (37), Bidar (32), Bellary (30), Bangalore Rural (27), Chikmagalur (22), Bijapur and Dharwad (21 each), and Koppal (20) districts. The least number of cases were reported from districts such as Bangalore Urban and Udupi (2 each), Raichur (5), and Kodagu (6).
