KOTTAYAM, FEB. 17. Six BJP activists in the Idukki district unit of the party were sentenced to imprisonment, ranging from 16 to 39 months, by the Thodupuzha Chief Judical Magistrate Court on Tuesday. The case was in connection with the violence in the party district office at Thodupuzha, following a fast observed by the then district vice-president of the BJP, P.P. Anil Kumar, Gopi Pazhukkakulam, all BJP leaders, and others, who were injured in the melee. The defendants could not produce some of their key witnesses during the trial since they found themselves on the opposing side on account of the fast-changing equations in the party during the trial. The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Janardhanan, sentenced the party district secretary, P.Velukkuttan, the former district vice-president, K.K. Suresh, Kumar and the former Kumaramangalm vice-president, Kuttan, alias Santhosh, to imprisonment for a period of three years and three months on various counts. The former district general secretary, P.R. Vinod, the district committee member, Santhosh, and the municipal committee secretary, T.S. Ramesh, to imprisonment for a period of 16 months on various counts.
