THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 17. The CPI State Executive has decided to field the former Chief Minister, P.K. Vasudevan Nair, in Thiruvananthapuram and the All-India Kisan Sabha leader, C.K. Chandrappan, in Thrissur in the Lok Sabha poll. The decision is subject to ratification by the CPI State council meeting here tomorrow. The CPI executive zeroed in on Mr. Vasudevan Nair for Thiruvananthapuram after protracted discussions. It decided to field Mr. Vasudevan Nair after considering the names of the AITUC State general secretary, C. Divakaran, and the CPI district secretary, P. Ramachandran Nair. The CPI district unit had insisted on getting the former Chief Minister as their candidate and got the State executive to agree to it. The other name considered by the party for Thiruvananthapuram was that of the former Food Minister, E. Chandrasekharan Nair. However Mr. Chandrasekharan Nair opted out of the fray. The decision to field Mr. Chandrappan in Thrissur is in fulfilment of the Thrissur party unit's desire to have either Mr. Vasudevan Nair or Mr. Chandrappan as their candidate. There has been talk of the CPI(M) wishing to exchange Alappuzha for Thiruvananthapuram but CPI sources insisted that there was no question of such an exchange of seats. Since the CPI has decided to field Mr.Vasudevan Nair in Thiruvananthapuram, the CPI(M) leadership is unlikely to press the issue when the LDF State committee meets here on Thursday to finalise the list of LDF candidates for the Lok Sabha polls. The CPI state executive has also decided to field Chengara Surendran in Adoor and P.P. Suneer in Ponnani.
