THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 17 . The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, has said the Government will set up another central prison in Kottayam and five new sub-jails in Kannur, Kozhikode, Viyyur, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram. Inaugurating the State Prison's Department's State-level two-day seminar "Correctional Administration" at the VJT Hall here today, Mr. Antony said instructions had already been issued to identify the land for setting up a prison in Kottayam. The Chief Minister said the construction of jails at Hosdurg in Kasaragod and Chittor in Palakkad was nearing completion. An open jail would be set up at Chimeni and a sum of Rs. 8 lakhs had been allocated for the project. The sub-jail in Alappuzha would be relocated and the juvenile home in Kannur would be converted into a narcotic sub-jail, he said. The sub-jail at Thodupuzha would be relocated adjacent to the court complex. Mr. Antony said a sum of Rs. 6.25 lakhs had been provided in the budget for the relocation of the sub-jail and more funds would be provided, if needed. Mr. Antony said the Government would provide more funds if needed for the modernisation of the prisons.
