Sabarimala tragedy: call to publish report

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, FEB.17. The royal family of Pandalam has called upon the Government to publish the findings and recommendations of the Justice Chandrashekhara Menon Commission on the hill top tragedy at Sabarimala in 1999 in which 52 pilgrims were killed and several others injured.

Talking to the The Hindu here today, the Pandalam palace managing committee president, P. Ramavarma Raja, said the Government owed an apology and explanation to the Ayyappa devotees as the Commission had found it ``guilty of negligence''. The Commission had reportedly found the Government, the Travancore Devaswom Board and Kerala State Electricity Board responsible for the loss of 52 lives.

Mr. Ramavarma demanded that the Government, TDB and KSEB jointly initiate steps to compensate for the loss. He said that TDB had been opposing the idea of a statutory committee for Sabarimala temple administration saying that it would affect the running of 1,100 odd temples which were mainly dependent on the revenue from Sabarimala.
