CHENNAI, FEB. 17. Simon Jones indicated that he had put a career-threatening knee injury behind him, firing England `A' to a 187-run victory over Tamil Nadu on the fourth day of the practice game at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday. The Glamorgan paceman, following up his five for 57 in the first innings, provided little respite to the young home line-up in the second, returning five for 31. Set a target of 331 in 79 overs - England `A' declared its second innings at 295 for nine - Tamil Nadu was bundled out for 143. It was all over 26 minutes before tea, when Jones had Vignesh (0) fending a short-pitched delivery into the forward short-leg's hands. Earlier, in hostile post-lunch burst of 4-1-3-3, Jones sliced through the Tamil Nadu middle-order, having Vasudeva Das (15) edging one to second slip, combining with wicket-keeper Matthew Prior to send back E. Suresh (0) and trapping S.R. Ganesh Kumar (6) leg-before. Tamil Nadu had got off to a stuttering start with paceman Simon Francis castling Anirudh Srikkanth (3) and Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan (27), while left-arm seamer Graham Wagg accounting for skipper S. Suresh (38). There was some consolation for Tamil Nadu though, when left-arm spinner Vidyut added one more to his four wickets on Monday finishing with five for 74. England `A' coach Rodney Marsh expressed happiness with the bowling, but was concerned that the batsmen were not converting the starts into sizable scores. Considering that nine frontline players were not available for this match, Tamil Nadu coach B. Arun said his inexperienced team put up a worthy fight on the first three days. The scores: England `A' 368 & 295 for nine decl. (S. Newman 57, Kadeer Ali 56, M. Prior 35, M. Lumb 27, K. Pietersen 31, B. Shafayat 27, S. Jones 25, Vidyut five for 74) bt Tamil Nadu 333 & 143 (Vidyut 27, S. Suresh 38, S. Jones five for 31).
