Goshree bridges: last girder to be launched next week

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB. 17. The last girder of the third of the Goshree bridges will be launched on February 25 marking the end of the last phase of the prestigious bridges project.

Three more girders remain to be launched and the first of these three are expected to be in place by early next week. Work on two of these pre-cast girders is complete while another is awaiting the finishing touches.

The launch of the last girder of the third bridge, between Vallarpadam and Vypeen, will coincide with the completion of the earth-filling works for the link road on Vallarpadam Island.

The roadwork is progressing apace to be completed by March 15 when the bridges are expected to be ready for commissioning.

Work on the hand railings for the bridges is also progressing fast. While the works are virtually complete on the first bridge, between Ernakulam and Bolghatty, work is progressing fast on the second bridge.

It is learnt that owing to the instability of the land on the Vallarpadam Island, road works have been slightly delayed. This, however, is not expected to unduly delay the commissioning of the roads in tandem with the opening of the bridges.

Meanwhile, the Goshree Island Development Authority (GIDA) has invited global bids for the sale of its 53.54 acres of land that was reclaimed to be sold to finance the bridges project. The project, costing Rs. 84 crores, is being powered by a loan from a consortium of banks and financial institutions backed by a State Government guarantee.

Having divided the land for sale into four separate plots, GIDA has offered four options to the potential bidders. Under these options, the bidders are allowed to go for the entire land or go for plots of their choice. The earnest money deposits for these vary as specified in the conditions for the sale of the land.

The sale of the tender forms will be closed at 1 p.m. on March 29 and the bids have to be received at the GIDA office by 3 p.m. on March 30. A pre-bid meeting will be held at Hotel Taj Residency at 3 p.m. on March 15.
