The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) launched its golden jubilee celebrations today with the "best gift" that it could ask for the Rs. 15-crore Gamma Knife that will help the premier institute revolutionise the way brain surgeries are performed in India. The Union Health Minister, Sushma Swaraj, announced the long-awaited release of funds for the purchase of this precise and powerful 20-tonne instrument, which can destroy deep-seated vascular malformations and brain tumours once considered inoperable. Ms. Swaraj, who is the President of NIMHANS, said in her presidential address that ever mindful of the importance of mental health, the 10th Five-Year Plan had seen allocations enhanced to Rs. 190 crore from Rs. 28 crore in the Ninth Plan. The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations, said it was a proud moment for NIMHANS to be looking back on 50 years of excellence. It had achieved the deemed university status, and the quality of training imparted here was recognised globally. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, released a commemorative volume, "Integrating Mental Health and Neurosciences". The Director of NIMHANS, D. Nagaraja, was present. The former directors of NIMHANS, R.M. Verma, G.
