dated February 19, 1954: Food supply in India

The food position in the country in 1954 is likely to be much more favourable than in the last several years, said Mr. M. V. Krishnappa, Deputy Food Minister, in reply to Mr. L. J. Singh in the House of the People on February 17. A brief review of the food situation was made both by the Food Minister, Mr. Rafi Ahmed Kidwai and his deputy, Mr. Krishnappa, in the course of reply to a volley of questions. The kharif crop of 1953-54, said Mr. Krishnappa, was good and there was a promise of a good winter crop which would be harvested in the next two or three months. In view of the satisfactory supply position, coarse grain had been decontrolled since January 1, 1954. Wheat had also been decontrolled though inter-State movement of wheat on trade account was still not permitted.
