Stocks turn weak on late selling

MUMBAI, FEB. 18. Equities lost early gains and even registered moderate falls, pushing the Sensex down by nine points at close on the Bombay Stock Exchange today due to late selling pressure from retail investors and operators.

After rising to the intra-day high of 6082.80 in line with the initial stocks upsurge, the BSE benchmark 30-share index later fell to end the session at 6027.02 against yesterday's close of 6035.80, netting a fall of 8.78 points. Heavy weighted counters such as HLL, SBI, Tisco, L&T, Satyam Computer, Infosys Technologies, Grasim, BHEL, Bajaj Auto and ACC recorded marked falls on profit booking by investors. However, PSU stocks, particularly those that are coming out with a public offer in the primary market, attracted fairly good investment buying.

ONGC, MTNL, HPCL, RIL, GACL, ITC and Tata Motors scored handsome gains on fresh buying support. ONGC were exceptionally firm on hectic buying prompted by the company's proposal to set up seven non-government firms. — PTI
