Sonia slams `propagation of hatred'

NEW DELHI, FEB. 18 . The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today said those propagating hatred and violence for narrow political gains would not be able to bring peace and prosperity in the country.

``Those who preach hatred and violence cannot bring peace and prosperity. We have to guard against such forces and join hands to rebuild the nation,'' she said after laying the foundation stone for a memorial for Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur on the outskirts of the capital.

Recalling Guru Teg Bahadur's supreme sacrifice for the welfare and protection of the downtrodden and poor, Ms. Gandhi said he had always worked for uniting society. ``When he sacrificed his life, it was a very tough time for society. Social imbalance and atrocities against the poor were very acute.''

During the freedom struggle, the same spirit of Guru Teg Bahadur was followed by the freedom fighters to bring democracy, she added.

Earlier, the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, and representatives of various Sikh organisations felicitated Ms. Gandhi.
