Defacement of public buildings banned

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 18. The District Magistrate of Pondicherry, V. Candavelou, who is also Returning officer of the Lok Sabha poll in the Union Territory, today said that no political party should deface or spoil public buildings.

He said writings, painting election symbols or pasting posters on public places were banned under the provisions of the Pondicherry Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act 2000. Anyone committing the offence in violation of the provisions of the Act would be penalised with imprisonment, which might extend to one year or fine which might extend to Rs. 1000 or both, he said in a communication.

As far as private premises were concerned, advertisements could be made only with the written permission of the owner of the place concerned.

However, such advertisements should not cause any inconvenience to the people or incite religious feelings of a section of the public and cause law and order problem.
