Intense cold wave in Himachal

SHIMLA, FEB. 18. Avalanche threat loomed large over high-altitude areas and intense cold wave conditions today returned to most parts of Himachal Pradesh as the entire tribal belt and other higher reaches experienced intermittent heavy snowfall and the mid hills were lashed by rain and hail.

Shimla and its surrounding areas experienced intermittent rains and hail, accompanied by high velocity icy winds, causing a sharp fall in temperature.

The tribal areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul, Spiti, Pangi and Bharmaur, mighty Rohtang Pass, sprawling Dhauladhar ranges in Kangra, Churdhar ranges, land-locked Dodra Kwar area of Shimla had another spell of heavy snowfall further aggravating the cold wave conditions.

The minimum temperature in Lahaul, Spiti, Pangi Pin and Hangrag stayed between minus 12 and minus 23 degrees celsius and all lakes, springs and other natural sources of water were frozen in high-altitude tribal areas for past eight weeks.

Avalanche threat loomed large over the high altitude areas and people had been advised to restrict outdoor movement.

The key tourist resort of Narkanda and Sarahan in Shimla district, Manali in Kullu district and Solang nallah ski slopes also experienced fresh snowfall while the lower areas of Kullu, Dharamsala, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Shimla and Sirmaur had widespread rains. - PTI
