Delhi gets more time to fill teachers' posts

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 18. The Delhi High Court has given more time to the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to fill vacancies of about 10,000 teachers in their schools in the Capital.

Justice S.K. Kaul is seized of a contempt petition against the Directorate of Education and the Delhi State Subordinate Services Board (DSSSB) for not implementing an order by another judge of the High Court of 2001 asking the two respondents to wipe out the vacancies before the beginning of the academic session in 2003.

The State Government and the MCD had been asked by the High Court in 2001 to ensure zero vacancy in their schools by April and July, 2003 respectively.

In replies to a contempt petition against the two filed by the Social Jurist, a voluntary organisation, the State Government and the Corporation have recently submitted that steps are being taken to comply with the High Court by April, 2004.

Since the city Government and the Corporation took the plea that there was a stay on appointment of teachers in the schools run by them, Justice Kaul asked the two to urge the High Court to issue clarifications on the stay.

The High Court granted the stay on the issue of reservation of seats for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in the appointment of teachers.
