Tiruchi
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI, FEB.18 . The Ponmalai All-Woman Police Station (AWPS) was declared open here today, with the arrival of the first couple to seek counselling and protection for their marriage. This is the fourth AWPS in the city. The others are at Cantonment, Srirangam and Fort. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Maheswar Dayal, was at hand to observe the functioning of the new station housed at a vintage building. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, had already launched formally. After the formalities were over, Vijayalakshmi (20) and Thirumalaisamy (23), an employee of a marble company at Erode, came with a petition, seeking to protect their marriage solemnised at the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple earlier in the day. Mr. Dayal heard them out, and directed the personnel to look into the case.
Manaparai AWPS opened
An AWPS began functioning at Manaparai today. This also happened to be the fourth in the Tiruchi (Rural) police district. Three others were functioning at Tiruverambur, Lalgudi and Musiri. The new AWPS will function on the Manaparai police station campus itself. With heightened awareness among people, especially women, the role of the AWPS has come into sharp focus. The conciliatory tone of the personnel, in sharp contrast to their male counterparts elsewhere, and the effective interventions to help women in distress, have helped to check many crimes against women. The two new AWPS would go a long way in reaching out to the women in need of assistance, it is felt.
