Students from Madurai made it big in Madhya Pradesh, bagging prizes at a national-level meet. At the National Youth Festival held at the Jiwaji University in Gwalior from February 4 to 8, the drama and fine arts team that represented the Madurai Kamaraj University got the second prize in drama competitions and the team stood fourth in the fine arts category. Altogether, 60 universities from all over the country participated in the festival. The MKU team was represented by K. Jayachandran of the Commerce Department of the university, Vikram S. Vaidya of the Madura College, Jitendran of the Hajee Karutha Rowther College, Utthamapalayam, Hariharan of the Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, Madurai, Vigneswaran of the Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi, Manikandan and Santhi of the P.K.N. College, Tirumangalam, and Murugeswari of the SRF College, Sivakasi. The team manager was S. Pari Parameswaran, programme in-charge, Department of Youth Welfare, and the coach was Arunachalam. On their arrival from Madhya Pradesh, the team met the Vice-Chancellor, P.K. Ponnuswamy.
In the Temple City, `God's own country' was created for a while. Literally, the `Kerala magic' was felt in a Madurai college campus as the menu, meal and men made an impressive mark at the Kerala Food Festival held at the Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science on February 6 simultaneously with the `Bon Hotelier 2004', an inter-collegiate competition conducted by the Department of Hotel Management and Catering Science. The winners in various categories were `Bon Chef', for cookery competition: Shevaroys College, Yercaud; `Bob Obloyer', for cake decoration: PSG Arts and Science College, Coimbatore; `Bob Jongleur', for cocktail and mocktail: Chandiwala College, Delhi; `Artisont En Fleurs', for flower arrangement: Nijalingappa College, Bangalore and `A la pousuite', for quiz competition: Chandiwala College, Delhi. As the competitions were on, the college also had a feel of Kerala. Students dressed in Kerala costume, floors enhanced with ethnic `atha poo kolam', the restaurant, `kettu vallam', adorned with boats and ethnic cuisine. The welcome drink was tender coconut and the menu was mouth-watering with dishes like `drumstick soup', `muttai kari', `Malabar mutton biriyani', `Kottakkal kozhi kuzhambu', `meen polichathu', `avail', `milagu purati' etc. The overall championship went to the Chandiwala College, Delhi. Raman Rajkumar, General Manager, Hotel Madura Park Inn, was the chief guest. The Principal, G.R. Balakrishnan, presided.
The mathematics students of the Madura College have bagged this year's rolling shield for the best performance at the inter-collegiate meet conducted by the Department of Mathematics of the Lady Doak College. Students from 12 colleges took part in the competitions, taking a break from the academic pressure. The Madura College students won the first prize in quiz (A. Ravichandran, A. Rajeswari and A. Durga Devi) and in dumb-charades (M. Revathy, R. Meenakshi and T. Kasthuri Tilagam). The college stood second in `talentia' (C. T. Nagaraj, V. Prasad and S. D. Vijaya Krishna) and third in paper-presentation (B. Kalyana Sundareswaran). A felicitation meeting was held at the college by the Sruthi Maths Club to congratulate the winners.
The Annual Students' Meet for exploring the relevance of mathematics, MASTASFEST-2004, was organised by the Mathematics Department of the Saraswathi Narayanan College on February 7. The Principal, R. Srinivasan, inaugurated the fest and a special lecture was delivered by R. Baskaran, School of Mathematics, Madurai Kamaraj University. Altogether six competitions were held and the overall shield was bagged by the Lady Doak College.
An inter-collegiate cultural festival, `Penta Talentia 2004', was organised on February 13 by the N. M. S. Sermathai Vasan College in which 10 colleges participated. The Kaliswari College, Sivakasi, bagged the overall shield in the competitions conducted by the Department of Commerce. The Computer Science Department also held separate competitions in which the Madurai Mangayarkarasi College won the overall shield. In the competitions held by the Departments of Physics and Business Economics, the Lady Doak College stood first. In the English Department competitions, the NMS S. Vellachamy Nadar College won the overall shield. Jannet of Madurai Institute of Social Sciences inaugurated the festival.
A musical evening, `Blizz 2004', featuring the local musical talent among school and college students was performed in the open-air theatre of the Lady Doak College on February 13. Organised by the college's Centre for Music, the performances had vocal, classical and light music. Children from the Jayland School, Keswick Public School and St. Joseph's Matriculation Higher Secondary School enthralled the audience with western music. The team from the Mahatma School used both Indian and Western instruments to render a treat in Carnatic and fusion music. Girls from the American College and the host, the Lady Doak College, rendered folk music, Carnatic classical and hits of pop singers like Shania Twain and Boyzone. Altogether, it was an evening of good flavour, says Christianna Singh, coordinator, Centre for Music, while describing the musical extravaganza.
