Three held on charges of vehicle theft

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 18. The Thampanoor police have arrested three persons in connection with a series of vehicles thefts in the city. Police identified the accused as Jayan alias Jayakumar (42) of Poonthura, Ajay alias Ajith Kumar (25) of Punnackamukal and Shaji alias Sreekumar (34) of Sreevaraham.

The Sub-Inspector (Thampanoor), Sasindran Nair, said the accused were arrested while travelling in Maruti 800 car (KL-01-M-9417) suspected to be stolen from Kochi. He said the engine and chassis number in the Registration Certificate (RC Book) of the car did not match the numbers found etched in the vehicle. Mr. Nair said police have also received clues about a Malayankeezhu based gang suspected of making fake RC books to facilitate the sale of stolen vehicles to unsuspecting clients. Police said there were seven vehicle theft cases pending against Jayakumar in Kuzhithara police station in Tamil Nadu.

The accused were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-II on charges of theft and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.

Autorickshaw driver held

The Kazhakottam police have arrested a 34-year-old autorickshaw driver in connection with nearly a dozen burglaries in the district. Police identified the accused as Ravi Kumar, a resident of Kanjirampara.

The Circle Inspector (Kazhakottam), P. Reghu, said that gangs specialising in burglary relied on Ravi's autorickshaw for scouring neighbourhoods and identifying unoccupied houses. He said the accused charged Rs. 1,000 a day for his services. The accused was produced before the Attingal Judicial First Class Magistrate court and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.

Girl dead

A 19-year-old girl died while under treatment at the Medical College Hospital where she was admitted in a poisoned state on Wednesday evening. Hospital authorities identified the deceased as Malika, a resident of Anavoor near Neyyatinkara. She was brought to the hospital at around 6-45 p.m. The Neyyatinkara police suspect Malika to have committed suicide by consuming poison. The police have registered a case of un-natural death and investigations were on. The body is being kept at the Medical College Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Youth injured

A 31-year-old youth sustained a serious head injury when the motorbike on which he was travelling hit a pedestrian attempting to cross the road near Kovalam on Wednesday afternoon. Police identified the injured person as Santhosh, a resident of Kaithamukku. He is under treatment at the Medical College Hospital here.
