HYDERABAD, FEB. 18. Faced with stringent criticism about faulty meters in all quarters, the Auto Drivers Joint Action Committee has resolved to launch a `Correct auto meter and better service' campaign from February 20. If necessary, the auto driver unions will carry out `secret checks and cross checks' of the meters and impose heavy penalties on erring auto drivers. "There is a grave need to rectify faulty meters to restore confidence among auto users. Much damage has been caused to us because of this unethical practice," the JAC convenor, Mohd, Amanullah Khan, and leaders K. Yadagiri, A. Narender, K. Narsing Rao, Raghavendra Rao, D. Rajesh and D. Ramesh claimed in a joint statement here on Wednesday. Towards that end, the auto drivers would also enter into `a gentleman's agreement and strive to weed out faulty auto meters.' On the new auto fares, they claimed that there was no increase in the minimum fare and it was fixed for a distance of 1.6 km as against 2 km "to keep autos within the reach of the common man."
