Railways saves lakhs on bridge work

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, FEB. 18. The Bangalore Division of South Western Railway has achieved a rare feat by saving Rs. 57 lakh in the reconstruction of a bridge across the Kanva near Channapatna on the Bangalore-Mysore section.

The 102.5-metre-long bridge, work on which was taken up under the Special Railway Safety Fund, was dedicated by R.N. Aga, General Manager, South Western Railway on Tuesday.

The bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.99 crore as against the original estimate of Rs. 2.56 crore.

The Divisional Railway Manager, Mahesh Kumar, told The Hindu that the adoption of a cost-effective design and fast execution of the work had resulted in the saving.

The trains moved at a speed of 30 kmph on the bridge at the 57th km. It had been declared as a vulnerable bridge. It was constructed in the early 1940s for a metre-gauge service.

It was later upgraded for broad-gauge service.
