The mist is back again

NEW DELHI FEB. 18. The Capital will wake up to a misty morning on Thursday. The sky will remain partly cloudy throughout the day, the weatherman said. The minimum temperature is likely to remain around 13 degrees Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung on Wednesday were 26.8 and 13 degrees Celsius respectively, while Palam recorded a maximum of 27.8 and a minimum of 15.8 degrees Celsius.

Safdarjung recorded a maximum humidity of 85 per cent and a minimum of 36 per cent. At Palam, the maximum and minimum humidity stood at 83 per cent and 46 per cent respectively.

Held for graft

NEW DELHI FEB. 18. Two officials in a tehsildar's office have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Delhi police for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to issue a status report on the complainant's property.

According to the police, Sanjay Aggarwal, an advocate representing his client Rajender Prasad, had applied for a status report of his property at Shastri Nagar in North Delhi in the office of Sub-Registrar-I of Kashmere Gate on December 10, 2003. His application was forwarded to the area tehsildar, S.P. Ratoria. He asked him to contact the "patwari", Mahesh Chander, for getting his application cleared.

As per complaint, Mahesh demanded Rs. 5,000 from the advocate to clear his application. The matter was settled at Rs. 2,100 and the complainant was asked to pay the money between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on February 17. Mr. Aggarwal informed the ACB following which a trap was laid.

At the time of accepting the bribe, another personnel from the tehsildar's office, Harish Chand Khulbe, was also present. He too was arrested.

The ACB has booked both the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act and are investigating further.

Teenager killed by truck

NEW DELHI FEB. 18. A teenager was killed when the motorcycle he was riding on was knocked down by a truck at Nizamuddin in South Delhi today.

According to the police, Himanshu Saini (17), a resident of Hari Nagar in Ashram, South Delhi, was going on his Bajaj Pulsar, along with his cousin, Deepak (16), also a Hari Nagar resident, when the motorcycle was hit by a truck near "ganda nala" on Outer Ring Road between Ashram and Sarai Kale Khan around 3-45 p.m. Himanshu was declared dead on arrival at Holy Family Hospital, while Deepak has been admitted with injuries to All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The truck was carrying gas cylinders.

A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered at Nizamuddin police station and efforts are on to trace the truck driver who escaped from the spot.
