This Day That Age
The per capita national income in the country was Rs.246.9 (revised) in 1948-49, Rs.253.9 for 1949-50 and Rs.265.2 for the subsequent year, according to Mr. C.D. Deshmukh, the Finance Minister. Mr. Deshmukh gave these figures in reply to Mr. G.D. Bansal in the House of the People. Dr. Megnad Saha: "If there has been no increase in the national income does it not mean that the Five-Year Plan has failed?" Mr. Deshmukh: "So far as the aspect of the question relating to information is concerned, I may state that there has been improvement in the national income but it is probably true that there has not been an increase in the real income."
