Letters to the Editor
Sir, The ease with which Sher Singh Rana, main accused in the murder of Phoolan Devi, MP, escaped from the high security Tihar jail in New Delhi makes a mockery of the security system in our prisons. One cannot help feeling that the episode would not have been possible without the connivance of the jail authorities.
T.V. Hariharan,
* * * Sir, It appears that the escape was well orchestrated. It is election time and Sher Singh Ranas are needed for "party work." The rules only prohibit criminals from contesting.
A. Ramanathan,
* * * Sir, Film makers who had shown prisoners escaping through underground tunnels or walking out with the help of their accomplices disguised as policemen will now thumb their noses at those who had dismissed such sequences as those that could "only happen in films."
V. Rajesh,
* * * Sir, The `efficiency' of our jail security system has been revealed.
Adarsh V. Pal,
