Escape from Tihar

Sir, — The ease with which Sher Singh Rana, main accused in the murder of Phoolan Devi, MP, escaped from the high security Tihar jail in New Delhi makes a mockery of the security system in our prisons. One cannot help feeling that the episode would not have been possible without the connivance of the jail authorities.

Sir, — It appears that the escape was well orchestrated. It is election time and Sher Singh Ranas are needed for "party work." The rules only prohibit criminals from contesting.
