An eye-opener

Sir, — The news analysis, `A different tune in 1996' (Feb. 19) is an eye-opener. As children we read that Lal Bahadur Shastri abhorred using his official car for domestic purposes. However, with time, values in politics have nose-dived. Hypocrisy and double-standards rule the roost now. The voter has to choose between the bad and the evil. While it is not strange for a ruling party to use government machinery to its advantage, the Election Commission must ensure a `level-playing field.'

Syed Sultan Mohidin,
Cuddapah, A.P.
