Indira's grandchildren

Sir, — Harish Khare was brilliant in analysing the Bharatiya Janata Party's dilemma on the "threat" posed by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra Gandhi (Feb.18). However, it may not be out of place to point out that it is not Indira Gandhi's progeny alone that the two major parties are eager to share. The sons of Lal Bahadur Shastri and Ravi Shankar Shukla are also equally split. While Anil Shastri is in the Congress, Sunil Shastri is now with the BJP. Similarly, Shyama Charan Shukla remains a Congressman while Vidya Charan Shukla is cosying up to the BJP.

Ranikhet, Uttaranchal

Sir, — If we can accept the son of Indira Gandhi, who imposed the Emergency, what is the problem in accepting her grandchildren? However, the induction of Indira Gandhi's grandchildren into politics will not shift the focus from Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin.

Hilda Raja,
Chennai

Sir, — Mr. Khare has tried to relate Varun Gandhi joining the BJP with the dynasty politics being pursued by the Congress. It in no way legitimises Sonia Gandhi being made the president of a national party.

Saurabh Kaushik,
Chandigarh
