Letters to the Editor
Sir, We noticed a small error in the article we wrote, `The subsidy-tariff tangle' (The Hindu, Feb. 19). The penultimate paragraph should read: "Given this grim portrait, the latest news from the Food and Agricultural Organisation's State of Food Insecurity Report should come as no surprise. This report shows that after declining in the periods 1990-92 and 1995-97, the number of hungry people in India actually increased by 19 million over the following four years. While it cannot be inferred from this figure that there are more hungry people now than there were in 1990, we can argue that the declining trend of hunger in early 1990s has been arrested." We regret the error and would like this correction to be published. Sripad Motiram, Vamsi Vakulabharanam & Vijay Prashad, Working Group on Food Security in India
