Metro assures safety of buildings

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 19. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation today said all the buildings that were damaged or affected during the tunnelling work at Gali Hakim Baqa near Hauz Qazi Chowk in the Chawri Bazar area of the Walled City on February 17 were absolutely stable and were being restored by it in consultation with the Central Building Research Institute.

In a statement, the DMRC said there has been no increase in the settlement values of the affected buildings and additional measuring devices have been installed as a precautionary measure in and around them.

Also, the Corporation said secondary grouting of the tunnel is now being done. The additional cementing is being done to ensure increased stability through cement injections in the foundation of the buildings.

In building No. 3414, which had developed some cracks, the DMRC said temporary props have been installed in the basement and the debris is being removed from this building. The Corporation assures that the tunnel boring machine will only commence operations after complete safety of the structures has been ensured and the compensatory secondary grouting was complete.

It was at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday that two slabs of a shop, located on property no. 3420 and 3421, were damaged while cracks appeared in a number of adjacent buildings while a tunnel boring machine was working beneath the area. Incidentally, the machine was nearing the 850-metre mark of the 900-metre long tunnel between Delhi Main and Chawri Bazar stations when the incident took place.
