PONDICHERRY, FEB. 19. The Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, today said the department would provide tiffin to students taking special classes (after school hours) ahead of public examinations. The scheme would come into force from next academic year (2004-2005) and cover students of Standards X and XII in government schools. Addressing members of the Parent-Teacher Association and presenting cash awards to the proficient students of the Chevalier Sellan Government Higher Secondary School at Kalapet here, the Minister said 150 school assistants (Grade II) would be appointed soon. The government high and higher secondary schools were conducting special classes to enable the students prepare well for the public examinations. The students would be offered tiffin in the evenings. Already free breakfast scheme was in vogue up to Standard IX and it would be extended to X Standard also from next year. M.O.H.F. Shah Jahan, MLA, presiding, said the school had been registering a good pass percentage every year. G. Theva Needhi Dhas, Director of School Education, the former MLA, N. Kesavane, and the Joint Director of Education, Vijayalakshmi, spoke.
