Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, FEB. 19. A five-member delegation of Congress functionaries from Yanam today presented a petition to the Pradesh Congress Committee president, V. Narayanasamy, seeking reconstitution of the block-level committee of the party in the region. V. Rajeswara Rao, former legislator, who led the delegation, told newsmen that the people of Yanam should also be covered under the welfare schemes being implemented by the Rangasamy-led Government. He said Mr. Narayanasamy had promised that he would visit Yanam this month end and set right the shortcomings in the committee. Mr. Rao said the Congress should continue its efforts to get the Pondicherry Lok Sabha seat for the party. The allocation of the seat to Pattali Makkal Katchi was a surprise development and the party had no base at Yanam. A petition was presented to Mr. Rangasamy bringing to his notice the need to protect communal harmony. He said the ruling Congress men at Yanam had urged the Administration to name the bridge linking Yanam to Kakinada on the Coringa river after the late Speaker, Kamichetty Sri Parasurama Vara Prasada Rao Naidu. The Government, bowing to pressure from the independent member, Malladi Krishna Rao, had named the bridge after Potti Sri Ramulu, he alleged. The delegation wanted the bridge named after Kamichetty. The memorandum also highlighted the ``discrepancies'' in executing the Yanam indoor stadium project. The delegation included the former legislator, R. Harishna, the member of the minority cell, M.R. Khan, and the special invitee to the committee, P. Vishnu Moorthy.
