CUDDAPAH, FEB. 19. The Railway Kodur police unravelled the mystery behind the murder of the Nagavaram Agricultural Extension Officer, A. Vijayalakshmi, in agricultural fields near Alivelu Mangapuram, within two days by arresting the accused, Surendra Reddy. Surendra Reddy, who was in an inebriated condition, was going home in a autorickshaw, when Vijayalakshmi boarded the auto near Kondaiahgaripalle village and asked the former to show the house of one Madhusudan Reddy in Alivelu Mangapuram village, according to the Kodur Circle Inspector, N.T. Rama Rao. She also requested Surendra Reddy to drop her on the main road as she had to go to Nagavaram, after visiting Madhusudan Reddy's house, he added. While returning, Surendra Reddy urged the official to examine the fields where he raised sunflower crop and when she obliged, he allegedly attacked her in the fields and snatched away her `mangalasutram', a gold chain and ear studs, the CI explained. When the woman resisted, he allegedly strangled her to death with her saree. The accused later buried the stolen gold ornaments in a nearby mango orchard and went to neighbouring fields, to wash his hands. When the watchman asked him about the blood stains on his hands, the accused replied he sustained an injury when he fell down, Mr. Rama Rao said. Based on the clue, the accused was arrested and produced in Rajampet court, the CI said. He added that the post-mortem would reveal if the woman's modesty was outraged or not.
