Stone laid for two apparel parks

ANANTAPUR, FEB. 19. The Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, N. Kistappa, laid foundation stone for two apparel parks at Rayadurg and Pamidi in the district today. The two parks are being set up at an estimated cost of Rs. 7 crores each.

Speaking at 74-Udegolam village near Rayadurg he stated that the apparel park there was coming up in 17.2 acres area. It would be set up with Rs. 4.33 crores grant from the Government of India and Rs. 2.71 crores assistance from the State Government. The park was being set up under Textile Centre Infrastructure Development (TCID) scheme.

He appealed to the families involved in garment-making in the area to upgrade their skills and improve the quality of the product so that the garments could withstand competition from the opening up of local markets for global players as part of the WTO agreement. The price of the product also had to be competitive, he added.

Mr. Kistappa observed that setting up of more and more such apparel and textile parks in the district could provide an alternative livelihood to the drought-prone district, where people were mainly depending on the rain-fed agriculture. He said such parks at Dharmavaram, Hindupur, Somandepalli and other places, where sericulture was being done, would help development of the district.

The setting up of textile parks at Rayadurg and Pamidi were being taken up to modernise the operations of garment manufacturers, to strengthen the infrastructure for various linkages in textile industry, providing additional employment generation to 7,500 persons and indirect employment to another10,000 persons. About 5,000 families were depending on garment industry in Rayadurg area at present.

The Minister stated that by setting up the Rayadurg park the Government was planning to export garments worth Rs. 15 crores per annum and increase domestic sales to Rs. 180 crores by 2005.

Strengthening of physical infrastructure, provision of common facilities, environmental mitigation, skill upgradation, training, technology upgradation, market development, design and product development, testing facilities, business resource centre, warehousing, information technology support for information sharing and others would be taken up at the two parks.

The Joint Collector, Shashibhushan Kumar, the former MP, K. Srinivasulu, the Project Director of Velugu, Venkateswarlu, the Revenue Divisional Officer, Dharmavaram, K.N. Kristappa, the Deputy Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Narasinga Rao, and others spoke. Industrialist, M. Govinda Reddy, offered his advanced garment-making machinery for training purposes till the park was set up.
