Qureshi's move hasty: Ansari

SRINAGAR, FEB. 19. The decision of the People's Political Front chief, Fazal Haq Qureshi, to pull out from the All-Party Hurriyat Conference team holding talks with the Centre is a "little hasty," the Conference chief, Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari, said today. The conglomerate would take part in the second round of talks if the Government fulfilled its promise of curbing human rights violations.

"We will have to see whether the Government is serious about improving the ground situation. If it fulfils its promises on the human rights front, we will proceed for the second round of talks in March," Mr. Ansari said.

People should not jump to conclusions without giving ample time to the Centre for improving the situation. "The talks have not been suspended and the process has not broken. But a lot depends on the Government for its continuity.''

The Hurriyat chairman said Mr. Qureshi's decision would not affect the process.

"He has not quit the Hurriyat. Someone else will replace him in the talks." — PTI

`Threatened'

PTI reports from New Delhi:

A report submitted to the Government claimed that Mr. Qureshi had backed out following a directive from militant organisations.

It said local militants of the Jamit-ul-Mujahideen and the Hizb-ul Mujahideen had asked Mr. Qureshi to back out and make a formal statement or else face "dire consequences."
