Hockey
NEW DELHI, FEB. 19. The matches went on expected lines, as Khalsa College, Patiala, and DAV College, Jalandhar, made it to the final of the ONGC Nehru champion colleges hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Thursday. Defending champion DAV College struggled initially as it could not breakthrough in the first half, but recovered its rhythm to slam three in the second half for a 3-1 victory over Faculty of Humanity, Varanasi. In the other semifinal, Khalsa College, Patiala, defeated College of Arts and Education, Annamalai, 3-0 after leading 1-0 at halftime. The Jalandhar team was pedestrian in the first half, perhaps because it was not ready after having exhausted itself with a quality fare the previous day. The team, however, showed considerable urgency in the second half, as Yadvinder Singh deflected a shot by Navpreet Singh in converting the team's fourth penalty corner, eight minutes on resumption. After another spell of lacklustre display, it was the Varanasi team that infused life into the proceedings with Pratap Singh tapping home following an attack from the left flank. Two minutes later, the Varanasi team found its mood spoilt with an award of a penalty stroke, as its goalkeeper Satish Narayan Singh had pushed the ball away with his glove, when he was supposed to use it just to stop. The Varanasi team threatened to walk out, and an official with the rule book had to painstakingly convince the lads and the team's coach that the umpire was right. Navpreet Singh did not make any mistake with the penalty stroke conversion. Roop Singh put things beyond doubt by scoring the third goal for the Jalandhar team, five minutes from the hooter. It should not be a surprise if the Jalandhar team plays a lot differently in the final on the morrow. Prabhjot Singh and Harmeet Singh who were cooling their heels on the bench for the better part of the match, will hold the key to the Jalandhar team's fortunes in the final against Khalsa College, Patiala. The Patiala team, that beat College of Arts and Education, Annamalai, 3-0, started briskly with Rajinder Singh finding the target in the tenth minute. The team converted its second penalty corner in the 12th minute on resumption with Gurvinder Singh stopping and striking in a fluid motion, that triggered a round of applause from the appreciative crowd. The Annamalai team squandered a penalty stroke midway through the second half, as the attempt by N. Ramesh was ably defelected away by goalkeeper Dhanish Amola who dived to his right in effecting the save. Shailender Yadav sounded the board with a sharp hit from the right, in the 20th minute of the second half, to put things beyond the reach of the Annamalai team. The latter played well, but was unable to provide the finishing touch, perhaps because it was overawed by the occasion to be able to play its best.
