Surekha of SR, who won the pole vault event.
CHENNAI, FEB. 19. Three women athletes came into focus on the second day of the three-day 69th all-India inter-Railway meet at the Nehru stadium here on Thursday. V.S. Surekha, the Chennai-based Southern Railway pole vaulter, cleared 3.45m in the morning, 1.15m more than the old meet mark of Pushpavathy of Southern Railway in 2003. She cleared a height of 3.40 in her first attempt and then vaulted over 3.45m in her second attempt. The second-placed Shail Tiwari of Western and others stopped at 3m and less. Surekha tried to 3.55m but failed in all her three attempts. Busan Asian Games bronze medallist, J.J. Shoba of South Central Railway, struck gold with her sixth and last jump. She cleared 6.34m in her final jump which erased G.G. Pramila's record of 6.30. Pramila managed only 6.16 to collect the silver. Shoba started with a 6m leap and Pramila 6.12m. But Shoba improved with every subsequent jump, cleared 6.18 twice and then went up to 6.26 in her fifth jump. Her personal best in long jump is 6.38 set in the National circuit meet last year. Suman Devi of Eastern Railway cleared 51.61m twice to grab the javelin gold with a meet mark, erasing Razia Sheik's 49.68m set in 1988-89. Northern Railway continued to dominate the men's section with 106 points. Western and Southern trailed with 70 and 62 respectively. In the women's section, Eastern surged to 79 followed by Southern (64) and Western (49). Meanwhile, the relay events were plagued by problems. On Wednesday, Eastern Railway, which was given the schedule, failed to turn for 4x400m relay and lodged a protest. But the organisers refused to accept it. On Thursday, three women runners, Kunjumol of Western, Sahanakumari of South Western and Shyamalamol of South Central, who entered the long jump event, did not participate. This meant that they could not take part in the next event. So they were told to keep off from the relay events on Thursday evening. Fearing disqualification of their teams they were pulled out at the last moment.
