TRS to launch poll campaign today

By Our Staff Reporter

ADILABAD, FEB. 19. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti is set to launch its campaign for the coming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections here by holding a massive public meeting on Friday evening.

The `Adilabad Simha Garjana' is expected to be attended by an estimated one lakh people from Adilabad, Mudhole, Nirmal, Boath and Khanapur Assembly constituencies. The TRS president, K.Chandrasekhar Rao, and other senior party leaders would participate in the public meeting scheduled for tomorrow evening at the Indira Priyadarshini stadium.

Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao is expected to come by helicopter for the public meeting. The party has billed it as a prestigious event as a number of senior party leaders from different districts have been working overtime to make the public meeting a success. The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the possible alliance between the Congress and the TRS.

The TRS is going to hold another public meeting at Mancherial in the next few days covering Luxettipet, Chennur, Sirpur and Asifabad Assembly constituencies, which form part of the coal belt area. This is in tune with the party policy to bifurcate Adilabad district into two if the party, alongwith the Congress, is swept into power.

The TRS has staked claim to the Boath as well as Khanapur ST reserved constituencies, where it hopes to fare well. The TRS is keen on seeking four seats in Adilabad district, including the Adilabad and Luxettipet segments in the event of a possible alliance.

But the Congress leaders are against allotting the two seats as the Luxettipet segment, falling in the Peddapalli Lok Sabha constituency, was represented by the Congress legislator, Diwakar Rao, in the just dissolved Assembly. The Adilabad seat is represented by the Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, Padala Bhoomanna. The Congress and TRS are vying for Adilabad.

The TRS could win a couple of MPP and ZPTC seats in the local body polls two years ago and its vote share became a cause of worry for the rival parties. The TDP could scrape through in the local body polls as there were triangular contests in all the seats. The votes polled by the Congress and the TRS were much more than the TDP vote share. The two parties are confident of putting up an impressive show in the elections.

TRS general secretary, Mruthyunjayam, who is the coordinator for the public meeting, addressing a press conference today, said that elaborate arrangements had been made. He made light of the TDP slogan of vote on the basis of the development in the State.

He sarcastically remarked whether people should vote for the TDP, which was solely responsible for the closure of the Adilabad Spinning Mills and the Sirsilk Industries. He said that the share of Godavari water according to the Bachawat award was 165 tmcft, but the said quota is not being utilised. He said since 1983, not even a single land patta has been given to the tribals.
