KANCHEEPURAM, FEB. 19. For the first time wheat crop has been raised in Kancheepuram district on a trial basis at Thiruppulivanam in Uthiramerur taluk. A farmer has raised two Haryana varieties, HW 3094 and HW 3070, on 20 cents and the crop has attained the maturity stage. M.Thiruvengadam raised wheat as an alternative to paddy, as suggested by Agriculture department officials. The 60-day-old crop is in good condition. R. Sethuraman, Joint Director of Agriculture, who inspected the field, told The Hindu that the duration of the wheat crop would be 85-90 days and could be grown successfully in Tamil Nadu during winter (November-January) when the temperature ranged between 20 and 33 degree Centigrade. About two tonnes an acre could be achieved if the crop was raised before November first week when the climate was conducive. Water requirement would be just one-third of what was needed for paddy and cultivation expenses, including on fertiliser and pesticides, minimum. Wheat would be an ideal alternative crop after the Sornavari paddy season (April-July) in Kancheepuram district.
