NEW DELHI, FEB. 20. The Supreme Court today stayed the execution of Mohammad Afzal, who was awarded the death sentence by the trial court in the Parliament attack case. The sentence was later confirmed by the Delhi High Court. A Bench, consisting of Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice H.K. Sema, suspended the operation of the sentence while issuing notice to the Delhi Government on Afzal's appeal challenging the judgment of the Delhi High Court. The Bench directed the tagging of this petition with that of another accused, Shaukat Hussain Guru, whose death sentence was also stayed by the Supreme Court last month. The Court had issued notice to the Delhi University lecturer, S.A.R. Geelani, and Afsan Guru, wife of Shaukat Hussain Guru, on the appeals filed by the Delhi Government challenging their acquittal. The High Court had on October 29, 2003 acquitted Mr. Geelani and Ms. Guru, absolving them of all charges but confirmed the death sentence imposed by the lower court on Afzal and Shaukat Hussain Guru.
