No claims on seats: KPCC chief

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, FEB. 20. The acting president of the KPCC, P.P. Thankachan, has said that no one had made any claim for a specific number of Lok Sabha tickets in favour of any particular faction within the KPCC.

Talking to press persons here today, when he arrived to inaugurate the 13th State conference of the Government School Teachers Association (GSTU), Mr. Thankachan said reports that a faction in the party had staked a claim for eight tickets from the State was far from the truth.

He said that the seat-sharing issue within the UDF would hopefully be settled at the UDF liaison committee meeting on February 23. The names of the constituencies from where each of the UDF constituents would be contesting would be announced on that day.

Following that, a KPCC high-level committee would go into session within the next few days to finalise the Congress candidates for the Lok Sabha elections from the State.

When asked about the claim made by the RSP(B) for the Kollam seat, Mr. Thankachan said that all constituents had the right to stake a claim but it would be left to the UDF liaison committee to decide.

When told that the BJP-led front and the LDF had already started announcing their candidates, Mr. Thankachan said that an early announcement of candidates was not an advantage. The LDF had announced their candidates much in advance during the last Assembly elections, but it did not help them much. He said that the problems within the Congress will in no way affect the prospects of the UDF in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

The main focus would be the performance of the BJP Government at the Centre.

The recent statement of the Union Minister of State for Defence, O. Rajagopal, that the Centre would have done much more for the State had the people elected a BJP representative to the Lok Sabha, should have been avoided, he said. Such a statement was not only a conceited one, but was even a violation of the Constitution.

On the Transport Minister, R. Balakrishna Pillai's open announcement that he (Mr. Pillai) would ensure the defeat of the UDF at Adoor if the Congress fielded Kodikunnil Suresh as the candidate, Mr. Thankachan said that such open attacks should be avoided and instead be aired at UDF liaison committee meetings.
