Security tightened in Manipur

By Our Correspondent

IMPHAL, FEB. 21. Security has been tightened in the trouble-prone areas of Manipur, following the recent militant attacks on the houses of the Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi, and his ministerial colleagues and police officers.

Rebels lobbed hand grenades at the house of Mr. Ibobi at Thoubal Athokpam in Thoubal district in the second week of February.

Residences of the Art and Culture Minister, Moirangthem Nara, Thoubal district, and the Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Pheiroijam Parijat, were the other targets. A grenade which landed on the dining table of Mr. Parijat did not explode.

Police sources said insurgents resorted to such attacks when they were denied extortions.

However, the bomb and gun attacks were more pronounced as the elections were round the corner.

Recently, the Superintendent of Police, Bishnupur district, Potsangbam Dhanakumar, and his escorts were attacked.

Four policemen and five civilians were wounded in the shoot-out. Mr. Dhanakumar escaped unhurt.
