RAMANATHAPURAM, FEB.21. Videographing for issuing multi-purpose national identity cards began today at six centres in the R.S. Mangalam union. The Government has selected Thiruvadanai taluk in the State for implementing a pilot project distribution of the multi-purpose national identity cards to the residents of the taluk. All those, who attained 15 years of age and above, will be eligible to obtain the card. The district administration has divided the taluk into 373 blocks and appointed 343 enumerators to take a census. A baseline survey was conducted for one month from November 14 to December 14. The population, as per the survey, was 2.19 lakhs in the taluk. Of that, those who attained 15 years of age were 1.58 lakhs, said the Collector, S. Vijaya Kumar. A total of 22 units (computer and video's) have been set up in the six centres for the benefit of the people who can get themselves photographed for three days from today. Moreover, 75 teams consisting of revenue officials and representatives of the civic bodies have also been formed to verify the identification of the eligible candidates. The multi-purpose national identity cards will be given to the residents of the taluk after ascertaining their identity. The district administration has set up a permanent unit in the taluk for the benefit of those persons, who have gone abroad in search of employment. A task force, headed by Suriya Narayanan, RDO, will monitor the entire process, the Collector added.
